Whether my work will pay off is perhaps yet to be seen.
But I've been blessed with far more during these five years -- by God's grace, I've found identity and community, love and purpose. I've made a home and career for myself and found a most amazing partner with whom to share them. I've had hard times, marked by struggle, doubt, fear, stress and heartache; but I've had far more joyous times of great triumph, celebration, camaraderie and just plain FUN.
So for these past few months, I've watched September 4th approach, scheming about how to celebrate my five wonderful years in the city. After some careful consideration and planning, I devised the perfect way to celebrate -- to put out a compilation album of singles and previously unreleased live tracks that tell a story in and of themselves, that reflect the arc of my artistic journey from heartbroken poet to stalwart revolutionary. And I've had every intention of actually releasing the album today; but I'm very sorry to report that a toxic combination of busyness, procrastination, and extenuating circumstances has rendered me unable to release this album today (I'll appreciate your grace -- in addition to my writing and music activities, I'm currently planning a wedding, defending myself in housing court, working a part-time gig, teaching music lessons, and looking for a new apartment to move to at the end of October).
But have no fear!
I do plan to release the album tomorrow, if the stars align, and I'm very excited about getting this collection of recordings into your hands and heads!
[9/5 Update: the new album, GioSafari Does NYC, is now available for download and streaming on bandcamp!]
In the mean time, I will leave you with these consolations: a photo slideshow of these past five years, documenting my life in the city, and the winners of this summer's At Your Request voting (the song titles that you picked and that I will record for my next cover album). Together, we can take stock of these past five years and look forward to projects to come!
