[we] have our roles that we play on the show, as you can imagine. [Arrianna's] role will come off much more open minded and [Phil] will likely hold your feet to the fire a little more, but the basic tone will be “sell us on why this is a good thing to do and why anyone would want to do this.”
The interview seemed to go quite well, both hosts were extremely cordial over the phone. But it was a different story as the show continued without me. Arrianna did try to feign sympathy, as her "role" should be expected to do (given her own use of the word role, the authenticity of any supposed sympathy is questionable). Her overall attitude in the end seemed to be one of ambivalence and confusion. She repeatedly wondered aloud how eating food from the garbage or squatting was actually helping anyone. As far as she could tell, we were only taking it away from those who had real need - a valid concern and question!
If only it had been asked on the air :/
The fact is, there's more than enough food going to waste, about 50% of all the food produced in the US! So the homeless would hardly be lacking just because a few fringe activist members of society are partaking, helping themselves to the wealth.
I guess the fact that freegans are social/political activists never quite sank in for Arrianna. In the end she still only saw freeganism as freeloading. Nevertheless, I appreciate her honest grappling with these issues (even if it's only the radio persona doing the thinking/talking). I realize that it's not easy to re-program one's mind - the institutions that have appointed to themselves the task of molding minds have done a formidable job.
Then there's Phil, who I can only presume is still very much entrenched in this machine himself (or the character - whatever). Dismissing me as an idiot and discrediting my activist work on the show, he certainly "held [my] feet to the fire". It's only a shame that he didn't have the courage to do so while I was still on the phone so that I could defend my self, views, practice, ideology. Instead, my reputation and that of freeganism were thrown to the wolves, their listeners, and I was yet unable to speak for myself as they, too, filled the airwaves with their ignorant commentary.
That's just the nature of the beast. I had the same problem with the HuffPost article and I'll undoubtedly face such ignorance, malice, cowardice from folks responding to my appearances on any such media - people who still have their imaginations captive by empirical ideologies of violence, hate, exploitation, greed, and waste.
As for me, I will press on in hope, peace, and love with my sights set on building community and sustainable living, abiding by my conscience and obeying God. Because it's not only about dumpster diving, about free food and free stuff; it's never been about only that. It's about having a free mind, spirit, and imagination! We must reclaim them!
Here's hoping you all (yes, YOU) will join me and our humble freegan crew! Or at least keep the conversation going. I'm always willing to answer questions and discuss!
