So let's start with my pasión numero uno -- la música.
It's crunch time this week, as I rehearse with the band and cast for a production of Passing Strange (a musical theater show, formerly on Broadway), which we are performing this weekend at Black Box Performing Arts Center in Teaneck, New Jersey. It's a story about a songwriter trying to find his identity, in terms of his music, family, friends, and even spirituality. I very much see myself in the character and his predicament, so I'm thrilled to be playing drums in the band for this production.
I'll even have a couple spoken lines in the show! So If you're a fan of musical theater, then I hope you'll come see it this week only. Showtimes are:
Thursday, 2/25 at 8:00 PM
Saturday, 2/27 at 8:00 PM
Sunday, 2/28 at 3:00 PM
Here's the facebook page where you can find more info, RSVP, and buy your tickets! It's going to be lots of fun, promise!
Yesterday there were a lot of firsts for me: I performed my first set since I laid my alter-ego, GioSafari, to rest. My Gio Andollo coming out show was held at Arlene's Grocery, a venue on the Lower East Side. It was my first time performing there and also my first time working with Afton Shows, a national promotion site that reached out to me at the end of 2015. I also premiered a brand new song which made me cry. Profusely. I'm not kidding and there were plenty of witnesses to back me up on this haha (crying on stage is not a first though, I did this at my Life Is A Bike Wreck... album release show in 2009). Anyway, I'll definitely record a demo of this new song in the next week or two and post it for you guys to hear!
All in all, the show was great and I was very pleased with the turnout. But there was also much for me to learn from this experience, which I'll be processing in the next few weeks -- all to bring you even better shows in the future! In the mean time, I'll be writing more new material, building my team (band members? producer(s)? manager? agent? label? publisher?), and playing lower-profile gigs like open mic nights in the city.
Please stay tuned for updates on all this and so much more. And I'll hope to also see you at the Passing Strange performances this week!
