Of course when I actually vote, I'm casting it for Green Party candidate Jill Stein; but we all know that won't make the slightest difference in the ultimate outcome, considering that 1) she has no chance of winning herself and 2) NYC is so blue that my vote for her wouldn't even indirectly sway the election in Romney's favor.
Still, I'll want to root for somebody tomorrow night. So I've finally decided - I'll be gunnin' for Romney as the results roll in from around the country.
Because Obama has been bad for this country. As the folks at politicalcompass.org put it,
"As outrageous as it may appear, civil libertarians and human rights supporters would have actually fared better under a Republican administration. Had a Bush or McCain presidency permitted extrajudicial executions virtually anywhere in the world, expanded drone strikes and introduced the NDAA, the Democratic Party would have howled from the rooftops. Senator Obama the Constitutional lawyer would have been one of the most vocal objectors. Under a Democratic administration however, these far-reaching developments have received scant opposition and a disgraceful absence of mainstream media coverage."
These were among those very important issues that I listed in my last entry, remember? So my hope for Tuesday is that Romney will be elected and that all these lukewarm "progressives" will finally radicalize and start making shit happen. Occupy. Maybe lead a populist coup!
Well, now I'm just being sensationalist. But... what I'm saying is, it makes precious little difference to me whether Obama or Romney is elected. They're not so different in ideology (as I hope we all observed in the foreign policy debate), but enough people would be threatened by a Romney administration - women, gays, blacks, working and middle class folks, immigrants, and of course all people of the world for whom Romney should choose to demonstrate military might - that they might actually wake the f*** up. The alternative, an Obama administration, would only perpetuate the same bullshit that we've seen for the past twelve years (I hope we've all observed that Obama essentially picked up where Bush left off, carrying the torch of plutocracy 'round the world) while otherwise perfectly decent people turn a blind eye (nose would be a better metaphor here, since I said "bullshit" but I don't know if there's a word for having no sense of smell?)
So if my only real options tomorrow are Obama 2012 or Romney 2012, I've got my fingers crossed for the latter. Maybe it's a huge gamble. But I figure we're f***ed either way. At least if it's under Romney, people will know and finally start to care.
Here's hoping that you, too, will #occupythevote.
