It's been a long while since I've posted to this blog. Though I have had a few ideas for topics to write about (soon to come!), I've been busy with other stuff like jump starting the privilege blog and finishing the At Your Request cover album, among other things. I also haven't been the most organized and I've been procrastinating.
It's got to the point that I want this first post of the year to be a big deal. Like... I need to unveil something huge. Maybe something I've been thinking about and working toward for years now...
Ok, I'll just say it already. I'm starting an Uptown Freegan group!
To start, we'll just have monthly meetings on the first Wednesday of the month and food rescue missions on the first and third Wednesdays. This is only tentative, as it will certainly depend on the availability of other people interested. I don't wish to organize and lead this on my own and I hope (beg) that other people uptown will step up to the plate with me. Community is a key component of freeganism, after all!
I would like for us to cover all of Uptown Manhattan, starting as low as 96th street all the way up to the top of the island. Morningside Heights and East Harlem to Inwood. If there is support and interest, perhaps we'll also make our way into nearby parts of the Bronx.
The first meeting and rescue mission will be on February 6, starting at 8p. The meeting location is yet to be determined, but it will be in the Morningside Heights area, near Columbia University (roughly around Broadway and 116th).
Please find us on Facebook and/or Meetup to find more details and RSVP. We can discuss other ways to connect at the meeting.
Looking forward to getting this off the ground, I hope to see you next Wednesday!
